National Mile High Breastfeeding Celebration

On Sunday morning, Jody, Ava, Julian and I braved the record-breaking 100 degree heat to attend the National Mile High Breastfeeding Celebration in Denver hoping to help break a record of a different kind.

Lactating mamas with babes, kids, hubbies and others in tow gathered together with the goal of breaking the national record for most women breastfeeding in public, as well as celebrating and promoting breastfeeding. The heat seemed to put a bit of a damper on the attendance, and we fell very short of breaking the national record, but a new record was set for the state of Colorado with around 200 women participating!

News cameras were poised at the ready, but the only station that appeared to run anything (and it was a very short clip at that) about the event on the evening news was Denver’s CBS station Channel 4. Channel 4 also ran a longer segment about it on the morning of the event (view the video) and interviewed Jennifer Weddig* of the Colorado Breastfeeding Task Force. And NBC’s Channel 9 published a story about it – Local moms try to beat national breastfeeding record – on their website. It’s a shame it didn’t get more coverage, but there was a lot of negative stuff in the news that day, and, as the oh so morbid saying in the business goes, “if it bleeds, it leads.”

Despite the heat, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, especially all of the kiddos feasting on delicious mama milk. 🙂

Here are a few pics from the day…

*An aside, I believe I ran into Jennifer Weddig at the event. She commented on how she and some others really liked Ava’s “Li’l Lactivist” shirt and asked me where I got it, so I got to plug my store. 🙂 Too bad I didn’t have any business cards with me. Jody’s “My kid’s no weaner” shirt from The Lactivist store also got some compliments.

My posts have been few and far between this last week, but things are starting to slow down around here once again. I hope to post a recap of our very busy, but good week and get back to semi-regular blogging again soon.

  1. How fun! I like your tandem mama sticker 🙂

There was actually a big story on it on Fox 31 News at 9. I don’t see it on their website, but it was a great story.

I’m glad you got to go!

  2. Great post, Amy, and great cause too!
You know, every mother I’ve ever seen breastfeeding in public looks just like you in the photo nursing Julian. There is NO BOOB showing. Why is there any controversy? You don’t need to cover yourself with a blanket, there’s nothing showing! As has been said before, you see more breast with the shirts and bikinis in sexy outfits women wear on a regular basis.

Great job for braving the heat!

Don’t feel bad about a slowdown in blogging. I have been too, and I only have ONE child to look after… 🙂

  3. Good for you for going! I was wondering if you did, and you and Julian look so sweet, and peaceful nursing. I saw a very short article on it in the Denver paper yesterday as well. Maybe they will do it again next year. We’ll have to try to make it, if they do.

  4. It’s such a shame that the event didn’t get more coverage. I really wish there was more positive coverage of public breastfeeding instead of the abundance of negative stories. I guess that is the way it with most things though.
