World Vegetarian Day

World Vegetarian Day is being held on Oct. 1, which is also the kickoff of vegetarian awareness month.

Some of you may know that I’m an on-again/off-again vegetarian. I’ve had a couple of vegetarian stints in my life. I haven’t eaten red meat for about 9 years, but I do currently eat poultry and fish on occasion. For the most part, I try to make a variety of vegetarian meals, but meat is sometimes a part of our diet.

Wondering what the big deal is and why vegetarianism so important?
Some of the Benefits of Vegetarianism are:
• reducing the risk of major killers like heart disease, stroke and cancers while cutting exposure to food borne pathogens;
• offering a viable answer to feeding the world’s hungry, through more efficient use of grains and other crops;
• saving animals from suffering in factory farm conditions and from painful slaughter;
• conserving vital, but limited freshwater, fertile topsoil and other precious resources;
• preserving irreplaceable ecosystems, such as rainforests and other wildlife habitats;
• mitigating the ever-expanding environmental pollution of animal agriculture; and the list goes on.

Eating vegetarian doesn’t just mean salads and veggie burgers (though it certainly can). There’s a whole world of tasty, meatless meals out there. 🙂 To help you commit to going meat-free on Oct. 1, I’m listing some of my favorite vegetarian recipes that I’ve blogged about in the past:

    Feels a bit like I’m cheating, already being a vegan, but I pledge myself, hubbie & our lovely daughter to have a meat-free day with you on Oct 1st 🙂

  3. We actually eat vegan about half the year, tho not so much for health reasons as for religious. We fast from all animal/dairy products every Wednesday, for Lent, and a few other periods each year. My hubby is such a meat-&-potatoes kinda guy, so it’s hard on him, poor thing. ;o)

  4. What a great post! I will definetly join you on Oct 1st! I was a vegetarian for 12 years before my kids came along. Then I just got tired/bored of the vegetarian diet. Someday, (when I have some x-tra time to think) I’d like to go back to it. But I can definetly manage it for one day.

    Oh, and for folks that are thinking about it but not sure how well it will go over with the family, remember…a vegetarian diet doesn’t have to be all beans and tofu. Think cheese pizza, salads, grilled cheese sandwiches, bean burritos, minestrone soup, etc…

  5. So I have been trying to go vegan for over ayear now. Close…don’t really miss dairy except for ice cream and soy does pretty well…it’s the eggs that are keeping me from going totally vegan. 🙁 Though we do get local organic free range eggs from Monroe Organic Farms here in CO. Highly recommend them!! 🙂

    Anyways, I am hpapy to try to further the veggie front. AND to learn some new yummy recipes. I find I am not as good about it when I am super busy and like you I occasionally will eat fish/seafood and am not as stringent about soups made with chicken broth…

    here’s to promoting better health and the end of factory farming!!

  6. Honestly? I’ll probably forget. But if it crosses my mind, I’ll leave the ground beef out of the minestrone or whatever we eat. We’ve been cutting back on meat anyways, mostly because it’s expensive but also for environmental reasons.

  7. Yes, it’s amazing how many people have the misconception that a vegetarian diet has to be dull and bland, when in fact there is such a wide variety of tasty, vegetarian foods. My husband and I do a lot of cooking with tofu, tempeh, and wheat gluten.

  8. VT is like $4.69 at bestdealmagazines.com and on 10/1 it’ll be even cheaper than that ($3.69, I think). For that price you could make quite a lifestyle change pretty easily 🙂

    I’m in! We eat meat 0-4 times a week as it is so I’ll make an extra effort to go veggie on Monday!

  9. Every bit helps the animals, the environment (by eating lower on the food chain, agriculture is less destructive), and your own health. Even if you can’t be vegetarian all the time, just work more of it into your weekly routine. After awhile, you start preferring the veggie and vegan (no meat, no poultry, no eggs, no dairy, no animal products). Nobody is perfect, but at least we can strive in this direction, particularly if an inner calling is coaxing us on.

    I prefer soy milk to “real” dairy. There is zero cholesterol in soy milk. There is no “mad cow” disease in soy burgers. Wheat gluten sausages are very chewy and tasty. Fruits and veggies and legumes (beans and sprouts) taste fine, the more we eat of these, generally the healthier we become.

  10. Yay… I’m already a vegetarian so this should be easy – now I just need to get my hubby to try it for one day. I’m not quite vegan but my dairy is very limited and I don’t eat or use eggs in my cooking.

    No Pork in 8 years
    No read meat in 6 years
    No chicken for almost a year
    I’m allergic to fish so almost 30 years no fish.

  11. Lovely post! I think eating just poultry and fish is a good compromise; they take much less grain to produce the meat (and are better for you), especially if the animals are organic and raised/killed humanely. I’m vegan (though I use bee products), but not a militant one – if there’s some fish sauce in my thai food, or I accidentally eat soemthing with egg, I don’t freak out.

  12. great idea! we are already veggies so i guess it’s a little bit cheating to join the party but i’m always a fan of sharing our veggie-ness…then again, we do occasionally eat fish, so maybe we’ll do without for a bit. i’ll blog about it tomorrow:-)

  13. an all veggie day! Hopefully with more and more people chosing to go vegetarian, or at least cut back on meat consumption, there will not only be a global positive impact, but also there might finally be more to chose from when eating out than a side salad! 😉
