Best Shot Monday – 12/10/07 – Holiday pictures

After receiving a couple of Christmas cards in the mail this weekend, I realized that if I was going to pull off my plan of having Christmas cards printed with a picture of the kids on it and actually get them in the mail, I needed to get crackin’ – like actually taking a picture! So on Sunday, with the help of 8 inches of snow on the ground translating into a lot of natural light reflecting back into the house (I need all of the help I can get in the winter), I attempted to take some pictures of the kids.

First I did Julian (while Jody bathed Ava – i.e. kept her out of my hair) and got several cute ones of him.

Next I did some of Ava, and, again, got several cute ones of her.

And finally, enlisting my trusty assistant’s Jody’s help, I tried to do both of them together. I’d like to say I got lots of cute ones of the two of them, but that’s just not how it went down. By that time Julian was tired and ready for a nap and Ava had to be bribed with chocolate chips. I don’t use bribery often, but to get a good picture I will pull out all the stops. 😉 I did end up with two decent shots of them together, but they weren’t exactly what I had in mind. (Isn’t that always the way?) Anyway, I’m not sharing those captures today, but I am sharing the only other two that I’ve edited – one of each of them individually that I am rather fond of.

I would love to try again for a great shot of the two of them, but I’m a realist and I know that probably won’t happen for this year’s Christmas card. So I will be happy with what I did capture. And one of these days, when I’m feeling incredibly ambitious, I need to try for a family picture with all four of us in it, since we haven’t done that again since Julian was 15 days old. It’s time.

  1. Cute, cute and more cute! I’m starting to realize as a parent how hard the Christmas card shot is. I have a new respect when we get these in the mail now!

  2. Your kids are so cute! Great shots of them! I had the same difficulty in getting our Christmas card pictures. I took many pictures but only had a handful that actually turned out.

  3. Those are terrific photos. They look so much like each other. Great job! I know what you mean about getting the two of them together. I had to get help from my husband, too. Out of about 50 or so shots, I got 2 that I liked. Isn’t that always the way?

  4. I totally need to get my Christmas cards out…every place I look today has a reminder! 🙂

I love the shots of your kids and applaud the decision to use individual pictures! Much simpler that way!

  5. I love the pictures as always. It makes me feel better that a pro photographer like yourself has trouble getting the little ones together…Even your miss happs look good. Happy Monday!

  6. Adorable pictures, Amy, they will be great for the Christmas card! I still haven’t managed to capture the picture I have in mind…I’ll try one last time after her nap, and then we’ll just have to go with what we have. I had sucj grand hopes for an original, beautiful holiday card, but I don’t think it’s going to happen this year.

  7. I had the same problem!!! But what great portraits of each you took! Some of the photo templates come with several boxes, so you could always go that route….

  8. So sweet! Just did mine this weekend, too–I’ll post the outtakes this week! And the real one on Christmas.I feel like I should be exchanging cards with all my blogging friends, I feel like I know you and your kids! 🙂

  9. Darling pictures of two darling kids. Our photo Christmas card that you took isn’t the greatest, but it was all I had. Little Julian is not a happy camper in my arms with Momma taking the shot. Oh, well.
Glad you did the parade-sounds like a fun time.

  10. Cute, cute, and cute! We went to a studio to have our Christmas family pic done, and the best shot turned out to be one of the two boys tackling/eating the reindeer prop. You guess who was was doing what! It wasn’t what we had envisioned in terms of content, but it was even more adorable than we hoped. I wish I had your flair for photography.
